{"id":20972,"date":"2023-04-25T18:32:59","date_gmt":"2023-04-25T17:32:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sustainabilityservices.eurofins.com\/%e6%9c%aa%e5%88%86%e7%b1%bb\/eurofins-agroscience-services-sustainability-project-initiative\/"},"modified":"2023-04-25T18:32:59","modified_gmt":"2023-04-25T17:32:59","slug":"eurofins-agroscience-services-sustainability-project-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sustainabilityservices.eurofins.com\/zh-hans\/news-es\/eurofins-agroscience-services-sustainability-project-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"Eurofins Agroscience Services&#8217; sustainability project initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"sideimg\">ESG initiative: Observe \u2013 Apply \u2013 Change; a local project with long-term goals<\/h2>\n<h3>Eurofins Agroscience Services Group recently established an internal, colleague-driven sustainability project initiative<\/h3>\n<p><em>Based on the results of our latest EcoVadis survey, CO<sub>2<\/sub> emission and Health and Safety data, an in-house, volunteer-led sustainability team analyses potential areas for improvement and defines targets and projects based on these areas with business unit leaders.\u00a0 The team then looks to colleagues to champion and develop these ideas.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The goal is to raise awareness amongst EAS Group employees globally in terms of what they can do as individuals to combat the impacts of climate change.\u00a0 We are proud to be working towards Eurofins wider\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurofins.com\/about-us\/corporate-sustainability\/\">corporate sustainability goals<\/a>, created in line with the UN\u2019s Sustainable Development Goals in mind.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Observe \u2013 Apply \u2013 Change; a local project with long-term goals<\/h3>\n<p>On observing a growing problem, that climate change affects agricultural systems and business operations, EAS Group\u2019s Dr Sebastian Mahlow, decided to act.<\/p>\n<p>Engaging with EAS\u2019 sustainability project team, Sebastian set out to raise awareness in his workplace, our Agroscience lab in Hamburg, Germany, asking two key questions; What changes can we make to improve the impact of climate change, and how can we implement those changes on a local level?<\/p>\n<p>He conducted his own online research, and spoke with \u2018experts\u2019 from a local NGO, before establishing a plan.\u00a0 Sebastian learned that local practical conservation work can have a positive impact on the environment, even on a small scale.\u00a0 With this in mind, he focused on hedgerows as a tool to achieve this goal.<\/p>\n<h4>Planting hedgerows has numerous benefits<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>reduce erosion<\/li>\n<li>function as carbon sinks<\/li>\n<li>keep moisture in the soil<\/li>\n<li>form structurally diverse ecosystems<\/li>\n<li>provide sustainable timber<\/li>\n<li>provide vitamin-rich wild fruits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As project champion, Sebastian secured backing from EAS in the form of senior management buy-in and budgetary support.\u00a0 Colleagues were asked to volunteer 8 working hours for the project, during a hands-on day with 2 hours\u2019 discussion\/training plus 6 hours planting, supported by a local NGO.<\/p>\n<h4>The outcome has been fantastic!<\/h4>\n<p>In terms of increasing biodiversity, a habitat attractive to insects, birds and smaller mammals has been created by planting flowering and domestic fruit-bearing shrubs like elderberry, hazel, currant and chokeberry. This place provides shelter, nesting cover and food.<\/p>\n<p>CO<sub>2<\/sub> Reduction will be achieved in the medium to long term as approximately 125 plants were planted on the campus and in the field (nearby Hamburg) equalling 250 plants \u2013 this additional planted area could lead to storage of 2.5 t carbon (20-year estimate)<\/p>\n<p>30% of staff participated which is great for both training, and team building, with an overall change of attitude from many staff towards their perceived individual impact on climate saving \u2013 colleagues reported feeling fulfilled and empowered that they could make such a difference.<\/p>\n<p>Find out more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurofins.com\/about-us\/corporate-sustainability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eurofins corporate sustainability and our latest ESG report<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eurofins Agroscience Services Group recently established an internal, colleague-driven sustainability project initiative.
