PFAS regulations and testing solutions for consumer products
The recent surge of regulatory action to address the presence of PFAS regulations (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) seems to be showing no signs of slowing down any time soon. The rate that regulations are being introduced is so fast, in fact, that traditional PFAS regulations compliance testing methods will soon become unable to meet the needs of the supply chain.
This is especially true when it comes to PFAS regulations chemicals affecting product categories such as apparel, furniture, outdoor products, and fabric treatments.
Until recently, PFAS regulations analysis from testing has been primarily through liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (LCMS/MS) on a targeted subset of PFAS.
The focus has now shifted to developing and validating lower-cost alternatives that provide a more comprehensive measure of total PFAS regulations impact. This includes methods for quantitatively screening for total fluorine (TF) and total organic fluorine (TOF) as an indicator of total PFAS contamination, followed by targeted PFAS testing where required.
