About Origin ID Cotton Testing

Our History and Expertise in Isotope Testing

In 1987, Eurofins was established by the opening of our first lab in Nantes, France by our founder and current CEO, to verify the authenticity of wine. We began by developing an early form of isotope testing; Fractional Isotopic Natural Specification or SNIF-NMR™ testing. This gave us our name: Euro as we were founded in France, Europe with aspirations to grow and FINS Fractional Isotopic Natural Specification.

Since then we have grown to a global company with over 950 laboratories across five continents with over 65,000 employees. And we’ve been continually growing and refining our use of isotope technology to verify origin. We are now a global leader in using isotopes to verify origin in food, pharmaceuticals, and more. This isotope origin work is led from our lab in Nantes which has evolved into one of our largest sites worldwide.

Eurofins Sustainability Services is now using this expertise and experience in this technology of using isotopes for cotton traceability and cotton origin verification to meet the latest regulations.

The Trusted Science Behind our Cotton Testing Techniques for Cotton Traceability

As cotton plants grow they naturally develop a chemical signature, or fingerprint, from the local environmental conditions such as soil type, air and precipitation. By understanding the different characteristics of the atoms that make up cotton, we can reveal important information. Atoms can vary depending on the number of neutrons and these varieties are called isotopes. The precise combination and ratio of chemical elements and their isotopes in a cotton plant is therefore affected by location, temperature, weather patterns, water source and altitude. Our proactive approach for cotton traceability and cotton origin verification analyses cotton environmental signatures through SIRA. Isotope testing is a widely accepted methodology that has been used and trusted in the forensic space for many years. This type of testing has been used extensively in the food industry, which Eurofins also has significant experience in and can be used for cotton testing.

How Origin ID Cotton Origin Verification Works

What You Can Expect from the Origin ID™ Cotton Origin Verification Testing Process

  1. Sample Collection. Customers can send material for cotton origin verification testing directly to a Eurofins testing facility in the US or Europe. Alternatively the Eurofins Consumer Product Assurance network can securely collect samples for testing from the supply chain.
  2. Analytical Cotton Testing. We use an ISO17025 accredited three-stage Stable Isotope Ratio Analysis (SIRA) method to verify origin of cotton against a claimed country. We can also extract synthetic materials from blended cotton garments meaning our cotton origin verification can test at any point throughout the production cycle of cotton, from raw through to finished garments.
  3. Interpretation of Results. We thoroughly review the results of the cotton testing and compare them with data from our expansive reference database. This is where we verify cotton origin against a declared origin for cotton traceability.
  4. Result Reported. We gather all the collected data on the cotton origin of your sample, in addition to our in-depth interpretation and analysis, into a comprehensive cotton origin verification report. This represents a complete end-to-end service for cotton origin verification and cotton traceability, from sampling, cotton testing and reporting, all through Eurofins.

Our Reference Library Database

FAQs about Origin IDTM and Cotton Origin Verification

I have a cotton product, can your cotton testing tell me where it is from?

Our isotope analysis verifies a specific, claimed origin; it does not discover an unknown origin. Please provide a clear origin hypothesis (for example, “100% U.S. cotton” or “grown in India”). Our cotton traceability will test your product against that claim by comparing its isotopic profile to Eurofins reference datasets and report whether the result is consistent with, inconsistent with, or inconclusive for the claim. Cotton traceability with isotope testing is not a “Where is it from?” test, rather a “does this origin match what my suppliers are telling me” test. Here, “origin” refers to where the cotton was grown; post-harvest processing locations (spinning, knitting, dyeing) are not identified by this test.

What should I do if I don’t yet know where my cotton comes from?

Start by requesting written origin claims and supporting documents from your suppliers (e.g., invoices, purchase orders, bale IDs, ginner/merchant statements). Regulators require verifiable mapping of your value chain — from farm to finished goods. Isotope testing can supplement and verify a documented origin claim, it cannot replace the documented due diligence required to know and map your value chain. If details remain unclear, a risk-mapped supply-chain review can help you form an initial origin hypothesis that we can test. Eurofins Sustainability Services can support your cotton traceability by mapping your value chain, identifying gaps and risk indicators, defining a clear, testable origin claim for isotope verification against that claim. This process does not ‘discover’ a random origin; it’s cotton testing that tests whether your documented claim is supported by the isotopic profile.

Is my product from an area of concern?

Our cotton traceability service is a positive verification of origin, we are offering a solution to proactively manage supply chains. We recommend reframing the question from ‘Is my product from an area of concern?’ to ‘Can I be assured my paper traceability is correct?’ – consider where you are sourcing cotton from for verification.

Is your Origin IDTM cotton testing a validated test?

Yes the method is ISO17025 accredited and delivered through our accredited flagship laboratory in France.

How accurate is your cotton testing for cotton traceability?

We report results at a 95% confidence level, which is a widely accepted scientific standard for balancing false matches and false exclusions.

How are results delivered? Is this flexible?

We have a standard test report that has been designed to meet the industry requirements for regulatory compliance. In addition, we have an online results portal for clients to easily track and manage multiple tests, should this be required.

What type of samples can you test?

Origin IDTM cotton testing is flexible and can test finished garments or cut fabric swatches, yarn (cones or sample lengths), sliver / roving, and loose fibres from a bale or field. We need a minimum of 10g of cotton.

Where are you getting your reference samples from?

We have built the most up-to-date referenced library in the industry utilising our own collection network.

How do you maintain your reference library?

Isotope profiles change over time. We are continually updating our reference library to ensure we can test against current growing cycles. We are collecting new samples annually to reflect the most recent growing season in each of the primary cotton growing countries.

What other materials are on your roadmap (if any) for testing?

We have development work underway for certain natural fibres. Additionally, we can build a customer specific database as our development work shows that isotope technology can be used for these materials to verify origin.

What should I do if I get a result from this cotton testing that doesn’t match what I’m expecting?

We recommend you work constructively with your supplier to identify true source. Suppliers may be providing material in good faith, unaware of where their trader is sourcing. If needed, you may select another sample and test again.

Which other brands in the Apparel / Footwear space are you currently working with for cotton traceability?

We don’t share information from other clients due to business confidentiality. However, to give an indication of scale; for cotton testing we are working with global sport/leisure footwear retailers and brands and international apparel brands in the US and Europe on cotton traceability and origin verification.
