Understanding France’s AGEC law decree on endocrine disruptors
A key provision of the AGEC Law emphasizes the need for transparency and regulation of endocrine disruptors—substances that can disrupt hormonal systems and lead to adverse health effects in humans and wildlife. It mandates that this information be clearly communicated to consumers, either via the Scan4Chem application or through the Product Sheet of Environmental Qualities & Characteristics.
What are endocrine disruptors?
Endocrine disruptors, also known as hormonally active agents, encompass a range of natural and synthetic chemicals capable of interfering with endocrine systems in both humans and animals. They surround us in everyday life and are present in many consumer products, including furniture, children’s toys, and air fresheners.
Key provisions of the decree
Decree number 2021-1110 mandates that any person placing consumer products on the market must provide clear information about the presence of substances with endocrine disrupting properties. The French Agency for Food, Environmental, and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) has published a list of 128 endocrine disruptors and classifies each chemical as either verified, presumed, or suspected.
This law requires anyone selling products that contain substances identified as endocrine disruptors by ANSES to publish a list of these products and the substances they contain. This information must be in an open format, so collaborative platforms can use it to better inform consumers.
The requirement to provide information on endocrine disruptors in products starts no later than six months after the publication of the list of these substances (October 2023).
Why this matters
Endocrine disruptors are a significant concern due to their potential health impacts. By mandating transparency, the AGEC Law empowers consumers to make informed choices, thereby protecting public health and promoting safer products.
