About Origin ID Cotton Testing

Our History and Expertise in Isotope Testing

In 1987, Eurofins was established by the opening of our first lab in Nantes, France by our founder and current CEO, to verify the authenticity of wine. We began by developing an early form of isotope testing; Fractional Isotopic Natural Specification or SNIF-NMR™ testing. This gave us our name: Euro as we were founded in France, Europe with aspirations to grow and FINS Fractional Isotopic Natural Specification.

Since then we have grown to a global company with over 950 laboratories across five continents with over 65,000 employees. And we’ve been continually growing and refining our use of isotope technology to verify origin. We are now a global leader in using isotopes to verify origin in food, pharmaceuticals, and more. This isotope origin work is led from our lab in Nantes which has evolved into one of our largest sites worldwide.

Eurofins Sustainability Services is now using this expertise and experience in this technology of using isotopes for cotton traceability and cotton origin verification to meet the latest regulations.

The Trusted Science Behind our Cotton Testing Techniques for Cotton Traceability

As cotton plants grow they naturally develop a chemical signature, or fingerprint, from the local environmental conditions such as soil type, air and precipitation. By understanding the different characteristics of the atoms that make up cotton, we can reveal important information. Atoms can vary depending on the number of neutrons and these varieties are called isotopes. The precise combination and ratio of chemical elements and their isotopes in a cotton plant is therefore affected by location, temperature, weather patterns, water source and altitude. Our proactive approach for cotton traceability and cotton origin verification analyses cotton environmental signatures through SIRA. Isotope testing is a widely accepted methodology that has been used and trusted in the forensic space for many years. This type of testing has been used extensively in the food industry, which Eurofins also has significant experience in and can be used for cotton testing.

How Origin ID Cotton Origin Verification Works

What You Can Expect from the Origin ID Cotton Origin Verification Testing Process

  1. Sample Collection. Customers can send material for cotton origin verification testing directly to a Eurofins testing facility in the US or Europe. Alternatively the Eurofins Consumer Product Assurance network can securely collect samples for testing from the supply chain.
  2. Analytical Cotton Testing. We use an ISO17025 accredited three-stage Stable Isotope Ratio Analysis (SIRA) method to verify origin of cotton against a claimed country. We can also extract synthetic materials from blended cotton garments meaning our cotton origin verification can test at any point throughout the production cycle of cotton, from raw through to finished garments.
  3. Interpretation of Results. We thoroughly review the results of the cotton testing and compare them with data from our expansive reference database. This is where we verify cotton origin against a declared origin for cotton traceability.
  4. Result Reported. We gather all the collected data on the cotton origin of your sample, in addition to our in-depth interpretation and analysis, into a comprehensive cotton origin verification report. This represents a complete end-to-end service for cotton origin verification and cotton traceability, from sampling, cotton testing and reporting, all through Eurofins.
