Go beyond compliance and champion toy safety with Chem-STTM for Toys. Toy chemical testing that simplifies global compliance with toy chemical regulations, detect emerging toxic chemicals in toys, and mitigate product recall.

Evolving toy chemical regulations makes compliance complex

The toy industry faces a patchwork of toy chemical regulations and standards, such as EN 71, REACH, ASTM F963, California Proposition 65, ISO 8124, each with different toy chemical testing requirements and frequent updates. Multi‑market launches amplify the complexity of complying with toy chemical regulations, increase toy chemical testing costs, and introduce delays.

Despite strict toy chemical regulations, product recalls due to toxic chemicals in toys still occur. These issues often stem from inaccurate toy chemical testing results or unintentional chemical contamination within the supply chain. Beyond toy chemical regulations, brand reputation is of increasing importance and consumers are demonstrating loyalty to brands who have commitments to sustainability and ensuring the avoidance of toxic chemicals in toys.

A robust, science-based toy chemical testing solution is necessary to ensure compliance with global toy chemical regulations, prevent costly recalls, and most importantly, protect children and brand reputations.

About Chem-ST™ Chemical Smart Testing

In 2023, Eurofins Sustainability Services revolutionised chemical testing for consumer products by introducing Chem-ST™, with the first iteration designed to support apparel and textiles. Our sustainable chemistry experts saw that the global landscape of restricted substances was expanding rapidly and, in response, began innovating a new way for businesses to ensure comprehensive chemical compliance without incurring unsustainable costs or delays to market. Since then, Chem-ST™ has been a value driven testing solution used by global brands to streamline and future-proof the chemical compliance of their products, and can now be used to simplify compliance with global toy chemical regulations.

FAQs About Chem-ST™ for Toys

Are Chem-ST™ for Toys results compliant with toy harmonised standards in the EU?

Chem-ST™ for Toys for Toys incorporates nine targeted tests developed in response to harmonised standards, ensuring that our testing approach fully meets regulatory compliance requirements

Does the Chem-ST™ for Toys programme also cover chemical restrictions of US single States?

Chem-ST™ for Toys can be customised to address specific chemical requirements under various US-state toy safety laws, including substances such as PFAS, flame retardants, and CHCC

If Chem-ST™ for Toys is suggested as an alternative to traditional chemical testing, is it recognised by authorities and regulatory bodies as an equivalent or acceptable method?

es, Chem-ST™ for Toys is recognised by authorities. The key factor is our adherence to harmonised standards, which we fully comply with. Beyond the harmonised components of the regulations, it is the company’s responsibility to demonstrate due diligence, and Chem-ST™ for Toys fully supports this by leveraging our extensive expertise, strong industry reputation, and network of accredited laboratories

Is PFAS for toys now mandatory?

In the EU, PFAS will become a mandatory governance topic under the upcoming Toy Safety Regulation (TSR) once final approval is granted. In the meantime, PFAS has already been regulated under REACH Annexe XVII, as well as through the SVHC and POPs frameworks. In the US, PFAS requirements for toys are established at the state level, with several states already implementing stringent laws that restrict or prohibit PFAS in children’s products and toys. In Japan, the basic Chem-ST™ for Toys package does not automatically include PFAS testing; however, it can be customised to address specific. Japan has recently introduced a comprehensive ban on 138 PFAS substances, effective January 10, 2025, covering their manufacture, import, and use in both chemical formulations and finished products.

Does performing Chem-ST™ for Toys allow us to bypass testing against each country’s specific standards?

Yes, so long as the country you are shipping to or selling in is in EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

We are often challenged on time as well as cost for testing - will Chem-ST™ for Toys be a quicker process?

Yes. We can offer a timeline of 5–7 days, depending on the complexity of the components involved.

How does Chem-ST™ for Toys cover both raw materials and finished products? Does this require separate testing of the raw materials and the finished product, and how would that impact the overall cost?

Chem-ST™ for Toys for Toys can cover all stages of the product lifecycle, from raw materials to semi-finished and finished products. Whether testing is repeated at each stage depends on the client’s quality assurance strategy and preferences. By engaging our services throughout the entire lifecycle, clients can monitor the full product line while potentially minimising the need for repeated testing.

Does Chem-ST™ for Toys testing require the same sample quantity as traditional RSL testing?

Chem-ST™ for Toys requires less sample material than traditional RSL testing because it conducts fewer tests while still achieving the same overall coverage.
